Afaan Oromoo: Language, Culture & Identity
Course Duration: 1 to 3 years (Beginner – Intermediate – Advanced)
Target Group:
Children aged 5–18
Beginners with little or no prior knowledge
Refugees, diaspora youth, or anyone passionate about the Oromo language and culture
This course is a dynamic, fun, and significant journey into the Afaan Oromoo language, one of Africa’s most widely spoken and rich languages. Designed specifically for young learners, the course extends beyond language learning. It helps students discover their identity, heritage, and values through an exciting blend of speaking, reading, writing, cultural storytelling, music, and games.
Through weekly interactive lessons (2 classes per week), students build their confidence step by step in a joyful environment where learning feels like play, but is rooted in deep wisdom.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will:
Speak and understand basic to advanced Afaan Oromoo confidently
Read and write using the Qubee (Oromo alphabet)
Learn important grammar structures, vocabulary, and sentence patterns
Understand and appreciate Oromo culture, history, music, traditions, and identity
Develop critical thinking through stories, poems, and presentations
Build self-respect and unity through Oromo values like love, peace, equality, and wisdom
Course Levels:
Year 1: Beginner
Learn alphabet, sounds, greetings, numbers, basic conversation
Play language games, sing Afaan Oromoo songs, and draw cultural symbols
Introduction to Oromo culture: food, clothing, values, respect, names
Year 2: Intermediate
Expand vocabulary and grammar
Speak in past and future tense, write short stories and letters
Learn about the Gadaa system, Oromo proverbs, heroes, and history
Year 3: Advanced
Debate, write essays, storytelling, poetry, and presentations
Dive deeper into Oromo leadership, human rights, and peacebuilding
Lead mini-projects, teach younger students, or create Oromo content
